Australian design duo Heliograf has created a new edition of its award-winning Light Soy lamps made from recycled ocean plastic.

The “sushi-soy” inspired design, which mimics the form of the plastic fish-shaped soy sauce containers used in pre-packed sushi, is not only made of 75% ocean plastic but Heliograf will fund additional clean ups, equal to 2kg of ocean plastic collected in coastal regions of South East Asia for every lamp shipped.

Studio founders Angus Ware and Jeffrey Simpson hope the design, which takes its form from a product it describes as “emblematic of a broken economic model that doesn’t consider waste in the design process”, will encourage people against using single-use plastics.

Light Soy is packed in plastic-free packaging, including biodegradable inserts made from sugarcane and is designed to be repaired in the result of a fault. The original run of the lamp sold-out during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“When we first designed Light Soy we experimented with recycled plastic and it was of low quality and questionable origin,” says designer Angus Ware. “Now, in just a few years small studios like ours have access to certified recycled ocean-bound plastics. It’s exciting that so much progress has been made already.”

The recycled ocean plastic Light Soy lamps are available as portable or pendant designs via Heliograf, priced from $199 USD.
